Promoting community-based DRR on the international stage
As part of our commitment to knowledge sharing within DRR, BDPC’s Director, Muhammad Saidur Rahman recently traveled to Mongolia, the Netherlands and the U.S.A. to present at three international conferences. As well as returning with valuable and up-to-date knowledge for BDPC, Mr. Rahman is sharing BDPC’s long term approach of DRR through community empowerment and sustainable livelihoods development with an international audience.
A highlight has been the opportunity to discuss the structural aspects of DRR with engineers and other technical professionals at the 13th International Conference on Wind Engineering (ICWE13) in Amsterdam. Wind-related Disaster Risk Reduction was a key topic at the ICWE13, with Margareta Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, UN/ISDR) providing the opening address. This was followed by BDPC’s presentation on Wind engineering and vulnerable communities: some food for thought, in which Mr. Rahman highlighted the severe impacts of wind-related disasters in the vulnerable communities of Bangladesh and addressed the role of international expertise in mitigation.
