Climate change Adaptation: Exchange of views with the vulnerable people

BDPC along with NGO Coordination Council for Climate Change (NC4) initiated a series of consultation meetings

with the local NGO personnel, their beneficiaries and local people who are at the risk of climate change on 04-05 April,

2010. The purpose of these meetings was largely to know the absolute impacts of climate change from the horses’

mouth. Their experiences, sufferings, recommendations, obstacles and priorities came across from these open discussions.

While both BDPC and NC4 believe in community based approach, the meetings differentiated it in prioritizing

community’s voice rather than only hiring policy experts from the National level.

The first meeting was held at Kaligonj, Shatkhira on 04 April, Shusilon, a local NGO of Shatkhira and a NC4 member was

the co-organizer of this meeting. The meeting became a platform to raise the voice of and for the distressed people like Sor

Banu and Sirajul Islam who highlighted the terrible impacts of climate change in the field of agriculture, fisheries, small trades,

bio-diversity and environment.

The second meeting was held at the UNO office conference room on 05 April at Morelgonj, Bagherhat. Different NGO workers

along with their beneficiaries raised their voice on the impacts of Climate Change in their day to day life. One of the important

achievements of the meeting was that the local NGOs reached to a consensus in favour of building an embankment in their area.

The third was held at the Patuakhali Municipal Conference room on 05 April. Shaplaful Social Development Organization;

a local NGO facilitated the meeting. While the locals were more concerned to talk on the most recently faced disaster

impacts like Sidr and Aila but later on clarification from Ms. Dilruba Haider, NC4 convener, they shared the climate change

impacts in their lives. They decided to sit together once again to set the agenda on CCA on 11 April, 2010 at the office

of the Shaplaful Social Development Organization. BDPC assured support to these local initiatives.
