Enlightening the Youth on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation

Young School going Students could be the gateway for the effective mass awareness campaign throughout the vulnerable communities.  The ongoing programme “School Based Disaster Risk Reduction” has been conducted by Bangladesh Disaster Preparedness Centre in two unions, Khaulia and Nishanbaria, of Morrelganj  Upazila in Bagerhat under the project "Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction , Climate Change Adaptation and Sustainable Livelihoods through Good Governance", funded by Christian Aid UK.

The objective of the programme is to raise awareness among the school going children on Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation. A total of 3000 students will be reached under this programme from thirty schools (including both primary and secondary) located in above mentioned two unions. Till July 2013, a total of sixteen school-based Disaster Preparedness Programmes are conducted in remarkable responses from students, teachers, and their parents. Some of the schools names are Rupchan Government Primary Schools, 103 no Gulishakhali Government Primary School, Nur Islam Sipahibari Dhakhil Madrasha and Urful Sriti High School of Nishanbaria union and Chipabaroikhali High School of Khauli union were enlightened on the mentioned topics. It is expected that the knowledge gained by these children will be distributed to their households through them and ultimately will build a community that is resilient to disasters.

From School-Based Disaster Risk Reduction

These school-based programmes are being implemented in active consultation with Upazila primary education and Upazila secondary office and school managing committees.

To carry out this activity few initial steps were taken such as communicating with the primary and secondary education offices, preparation and distribution of letters and finalizing date, time and venue of the programme.

The reason behind targeting school going students is their high learning capacity that grabs information easily. Considering the fact that women and children are the most vulnerable groups to disasters it is highly important to capacitate them through knowledge dissemination and ensuring their access to information.
